Again, 2 killed, many injured in Plateau

Hell was let loose again in Barakin  Ladi and Riyom Local Government Areas of Plateau State following a confrontation between the natives (Berom) and the Fulani, leading to the death of two persons while others sustained serious injuries.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that renewed hostility in some villages in Riyom Local Government Area started around 9.00 a.m. on Thursday, when some groups of youngmen filed out to avenge Wednesday’s killings and, in the process, killed one person and injured others while many cows were also killed.

It was further gathered that the prompt intervention of men of the Special Task Force and appeals from elders in the communities prevented the situation from escalating.

At the neighbouring Barakin-Ladi Local Government Area, the fight between the natives and the Fulani paralysed business activities for close to four hours as youths on both sides of the divide were at daggers drawn over a disputed area.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that security agents and the local authorities, in conjunction with religious leaders, had, during the last Muslim festival, agreed to prevent the area from being used as praying ground for security reasons.

But it was learnt that a group of Muslim youths went to the  praying ground to effect repairs on the damaged part of the structure on the ground which was later damaged by Christian youths, leading to the confrontation  between the two groups.

In the melee, innocent people were molested; some motorcycles burnt while a passerby was beaten to a state of coma.

He later gave up the ghost at a nearby health centre.

Chairman of Barakin-Ladi Local Government Area, Mr Emmanuel Loma, who condemned the incident, said more securitymen had been drafted to the council area, adding that local authorities were making efforts to address the issue that led to the skirmish.

It will be recalled that 14 people were killed in a reprisal attacks in Riyom Local Government Area on Thursday when a group of suspected Fulani herdsmen swooped on three villages in the area and killed people at random.
