Ghana Shopping Mall Collapses leaving 5 dead and Several injured

The recently built four-storey shopping mall, Melcom, Achimota Branch, in the Ghanaian capital Accra collapsed yesterday. Five people have been confirmed dead and several people were injured. Thousands thronged the site, including family members in search of relatives. Police said around 50 employees were reported to be in the building before the collapse on Wednesday morning. It was not immediately clear if customers were also inside, with one worker saying the mall was yet to be opened for the day.

A spokeswoman for Ghana's National Disaster Management Organization, said structural weakness had caused the collapse of the Melcom store in Accra's Achimota neighbourhood which was opened early this year and collapsed shortly before the store was due to open for business yesterday morning. Over a 100 people were in the 5-storey complex when it collapsed suddenly.

Efforts are still being to rescue people trapped at the site as workers say that they can hear noises from under the rubble and can see hands of people trapped.
