PHD HOLDER LIVED AND DIED IN REFUSE DUMP
Dr. Olawunmi Thorpe, an Ogun State indigene, died a homeless man. You won't believe this, he was a Bachelor and Master’s degrees holder in Mass Communication and a PhD in English Language. To passersby and residents, who saw Thorpe everyday in the rubbish dump beside the rail line at Fagba Bus Stop in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State, he was a deranged man who spoke impeccable English. He died about 5pm Wednesday last week.
Before his death, two ‘good Samaritans’, Mr. Larry Happiday and Mr. Dele Olawale, who had interest in Thorpe’s case before he died, took his body to ensure it did not rot on the same rubbish dump he used as home. Happiday said he first met the deceased about a year ago, “I began noticing him around Fagba about a year ago because I live around Fagba. One day in March, he approached me and I thought he was going to ask for money. But he did not.

Sambo’s Helicopter Destroys 78-Year-Old Woman’s Home
The sand stirred up by the helicopter conveying Vice-President Namadi Sambo to Buanchor, Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State on Friday destroyed a mud-house belonging to a 78-year- old woman, Mrs. Bessie Obi, when it landed in the community.
Sambo was in the community to ascertain the extent of damage caused by recent landslide from surrounding mountains silting rivers, streams and causing flooding in the area.
As soon as the mud-house collapsed, Obi ran out and started crying profusely.
Obi was quickly attended to by officers of the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency and its counterpart in the National Emergency Management Agency.
The mud-house had three rooms, an old wooden furniture and other household items.
The Director-General of SEMA, Mr. Vincent Aquah, who assessed the damage, sympathised with Obi and the four other occupants of the house and assured them that the matter would be addressed.

Gunmen kill two soldiers in Bauchi
Unknown gunmen killed two soldiers and injured a civilian on Monday night along Kano-Potiskum-Maiduguri road on Azare Federal highway in Bauchi state.
The soldiers were attacked at a skewered meat spot (popularly called Suya) close to an AA Kankani petrol station.
The Second-in-Command to the Brigade Commander of 33 Artillery Brigade at Shadawanka Barracks in Bauchi, Lieutenant L. Adekanmbi confirmed the incident to Daily Trust in a telephone interview.

Commercial motorcyclists protest killing of colleague in Lagos
Lagos - Commercial motorcycle riders aka okada on Tuesday protested the alleged killing of one of the colleagues by a policeman in Ilupeju area of Lagos.
The protest led to confusion in the area as policemen fired bullets and teargas to disperse the protesters.
It was reported that the policeman shot the okada rider dead after failing to stop the biker on Coker Road in Ilupeju.
The cyclist had successfully evaded the policeman’s attempt to arrest him when he was surprisingly shot dead.

Odemwingie makes Nigeria U-turn and will return to fight for a place
According to the news that went viral on the internet last week, it was speculated that Osaze Odemwingie was leaving the national team but that seems not to be the way it is.
In a release on Monday by Ben Alaiya, the media officer of the national team, Keshi said his interview about the frustrations experienced by Odemwingie under previous national team coaches had been misinterpreted.
Keshi's statement read: “What [Odemwingie] told me was that after fighting so hard to qualify Nigeria for the South Africa 2010 World Cup, he was dumped on the bench when the tournament proper started.

In June 2012, the Dangote Transport company said they were looking to employ 2, 000 graduate drivers.

The police command in Kano State on Sunday, arrested 25 suspected gunmen over the killing of a policeman in Kano on Saturday.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, confirmed the arrest at a news conference in Kano on Sunday.

Hoodlums Destroy N20m Oil Palm Farm In Enugu

Some unidentified persons have uprooted and set fire on the N20m Belform cocoa and palm oil plantation at Agboefiugo-Umuaram-Ikem area in Isi-Uzo council of Enugu State.
The act, The PUNCH learnt, was carried out on Saturday night. The over 2,000 destroyed palm stands were raised as nursery from Ikom in Cross River State and planted in the plantation early this year.
The farm consultant, Odu Okim, on Sunday, described the incident as economic sabotage, “especially at this period that government is encouraging investment in agriculture.”
He stated that the destruction has set back the investors’ morale and would obviously affect the number of employed farm attendants.
Okim, therefore, called on Isi-Uzo Local Government Area, the Enugu State Government and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to commence full-scale investigation into the incident with hope of bringing the culprits to book.
Boko Haram Denies Killing General Shuwa
Boko Haram, the Islamic sect, which has unleashed a reign of terror on Northern Nigeria, has denied its involvement in the killing of one the country’s civil war heroes, Major General Muhammadu Shuwa.
Shuwa, alongside his military aide and an unidentified person, were shot dead by gunmen at his residence in Maduguri, the Borno State capital, on Friday.
The retired army general was buried in an emotional ceremony at the Gwange Cemetery in Maiduguri, the next day.
The gunmen were said to have disguised as guests who had come to pay the usual Friday homage at the general’s residence and opened fire on Shuwa and his guests.

Ayo Fayose escapes death, driver beaten mercilessly by hoodlums
Former governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, yesterday Saturday November 3rd escaped an attack from hoodlums who trailed his vehicle to Ilupeju-Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area of the state.
Fayose was not in the car, but his driver, Nathaniel Saliu, was. The driver later told newsmen that he was beaten mercilessly by the hoodlums numbering about four, who dragged him out of the car and asked him of his boss' whereabouts. Saliu said he was attacked between Ilupeju and Ire at about 12 noon when he had to slow down at a bad portion of the road. He said they only left him after they were convinced that Fayose was not in the area.
According to him, the hoodlums had planned to kill his boss if they had found him in the vehicle. The incident was reported at the Okeila Police Station in Ado-Ekiti.

Retired General And Civil War Hero Murdered By Suspected Members Of Boko Haram
The Joint Task Force (JTF), in Maiduguri, today announced the death of Retired General Muhammadu, a Civil war hero, who was gunned down yesterday by suspected members of the Islamist sect, Boko Haram.
His killing occurred 24 hours after the sect gave conditions under which it would negotiate peace with the Federal Government.
It is reported that he was shot in his house by four men who were initially thought to have been his guest for Jumaat prayers. They entered the house and opened fire on the General and his visitors.
One of the guests died on the spot while the general died on the way to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
JTF said its troops in the area immediately cordoned off the area and that a search for the assailants was underway.

Pakistan parents kill 15 year old daughter over suspected affair with a boy
Police have arrested a mother and father in Kashmir for allegedly murdering their 15-year-old daughter by throwing acid on her in an honour killing.
This is said to be the first of its kind in the Pakistani-administered region, although they are commonplace across Pakistan.
Police officer Imtiaz Ali claims the parents confessed to killing the girl because they believed she had sullied the family's honour.
The couple was arrested on Tuesday and an autopsy confirmed that the girl died of acid burns, according to local government official Masood-ur-Rehman.

Police Arrests Boss of Dead Houseboy
Lagos State Police Command, Panti, has arrested Tunde Williams, whose 22-year-old ‘houseboy,’ Onyeka Raphael, was found dead in the swimming pool of Williams’ house on Saturday.The police had said the boss was not cooperating. The officers in charge of the case has begun an investigation. Williams, a retired accountant, had been taken into custody,while a search was conducted on his home.A single-barrelled gun was found in the house but there is no evidence suggesting that the gun was legally owned.
Ex-councillor stabs teenager for refusing advances
A former councillor of Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State, Onimole Babatunde, is currently being detained at the Area E Police Command, Festac, Lagos for allegedly stabbing an 18-year-old girl in the neck after she refused his advances at a night club.
On October 26, Mariam Abubakar (pictured above) went to Pearl Habour Night Club in Rochester Garden Hotel, Festac to “catch weekend fun.” Her friend, who pleaded anonymity, said they only went there “to hang out” when Babatunde, who was obviously drunk, started to make advances to Abubakar.

Chika Unigwe emerges winner of NLNG prize for literature
Chika Unigwe, author of “On Black Sister’s Street” has emerged winner of this year’s NLNG Nigeria Prize for Literature, carting away the coveted prize of $100,000.
The Belgium based Nigerian author was announced the winner of the prize on Thursday at a World Press Conference in Lagos by the Chairman of the Board of panelists chosen to screen entries for this year, Emeritus Professor Ayo Banjo.
‘On Black Sister’s Street’ made the final shortlist of 3. The other two entries were ‘Only a Canvas‘ by Olusola Olugbesan and ‘Onaedo: The Blacksmith’s Daughter‘ by Ngozi Achebe.
The prize was instituted in 2004 by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited to promote and encourage authorship and the development of Nigerian literary culture and Ms Unigwe in the first Nigerian author based outside Nigeria to win the coveted prize.
Boko Haram ready for peace talks with Nigeria, says alleged sect member
The radical Islamist group Boko Haram is willing to enter peace talks with Nigeria's government if they are held in Saudi Arabia and spearheaded by a former military ruler, an alleged member of the sect has said.
"We are not actually challenging the state, as people are saying, but the security [forces] who are killing our members, children and wives. If this government is sincere, [attacks] will come to an end," Abu Mohammed Ibn Abdulaziz said in the city of Maidugiri, the northern stronghold of Boko Haram. He said Muhamed Buhari, a Muslim colonel who ruled Nigeria for 20 months after seizing power in 1984, had to be a negotiator during talks.

Gov. Rochas Okorocha Shuts Down Nudity Clubs In Imo State
Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state has ordered the immediate closure of nudity clubs in the state, describing their existence as “strange and devilish”. Okorocha, who gave the order in Owerri on Wednesday at the end of the meeting of the state Security Council, said that the operation of nudity clubs debased Igbo culture.
He said that such clubs had compounded the eroding morality of the youths and warned that the government would no longer condone their destructive activities. Many nudity clubs are operating in the state capital.

26,358 ex-militants donate N2,000 each to flood victims
The 26,358 ex-militants and beneficiaries of the Federal Government Amnesty Programme from the Niger Delta have donated relief materials worth over N52 million to flood victims in Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers and Cross River states.
Amnesty Programme Head of Capacity Building, Mr. Joel Bisina, made this known, yesterday in Benin, while presenting Edo State’s share of the materials on behalf of the Amnesty Office to the state government. (Zinny says "That's very nice of them, they sure have a good heart).
Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Nsima Ekere Resigns!
Yesterday, the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Nsima Ekere announced his resignation from office. According to news reports, he found out some members of the State House of Assembly had perfected plans to impeach him and promptly tendered his resignation.
In the letter of resignation signed by the Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor Mr. Inemesit Ina and dated Wednesday 31st October 2012, Mr. Ekere said he was resigning on “personal grounds.”
He thanked the Governor and the good people of the state for the opportunity given him to serve the state in the last 17 months and wished the Governor and the people well in the remaining years of the administration.

EFCC probes EBSU VC over contract award
THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has begun investigations into the tenure of the Vice Chancellor of the Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Prof. Francis Idike, who has been accused of running the university “like a personal fiefdom and whimsical expenditure of funds”.
Also, the university’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-EBSU), says it would protest any attempt to breach due process in the appointment of a new vice chancellor to succeed Idike whose tenure elapses on November 4, 2012.
A source at the EFCC told The Guardian that the commission was investigating allegations of inflation of contracts during his tenure (November 2009-2012). He stressed that the commission has got leads to unwholesome financial dealings in the university.
